 Swim Tests

 <Back to index

  • All new members of college boat clubs must sign a written declaration before they are allowed on the water for the first time. An example document will shortly be available for clubs to download. Individuals will be asked to personally certify: "I am able to swim 50m in light clothing.  I can / I think so / I don't think so / I cannot"
    • People who respond with "I think so" are allowed on the water, provided they are wearing a personal flotation device (PFD).
    • People who respond with "I don't think so" or "I cannot" must not be allowed in to a boat.
  • Completion of the signed declaration permits that individual to row a maximum of 5 times before they must be swim-tested; you should aim to send them for a test at the first possible opportunity.
  • You may send anyone, irrespective of their declaration, to a swim test; but if it is obvious that they cannot swim, please don't send them.
  • Swim tests cost £2, to be billed to individual college boat clubs, and details are listed below.
  • Club officers must keep a record of anyone who fails a swim test, and forbids them from rowing.
  • If an individual has responded "I don't think so" or "I cannot" but did pass a swim test, you should get them to sign another form, confirming that they can.
  • Separate guidelines apply for under 18s - please email the OURCs committee for special precautions in this situation.

The Test

At present the test consists of (in general terms):

  • Wearing a t-shirt and shorts (as a minimum)
  • 45m swimming (any stroke)
  • Surface dive for 5m. You must have your full body submerged for the full length.
  • Tread water for 2minutes. When treading water you are expected to have your full head above the water and have your airways open.

This is in-line with the requirements of British Rowing and all have real-world practical reasons for their inclusion. All testing is carried out by qualified personnel.

Next Sessions

Please check the front page diary for up-to-date details of swim tests. However, swim tests for MT11 have been scheduled for:

  • 930-1130am , Thursday 0th Week
  • TBD, Sunday 1st Week
