Most Bumps Record

I've had an enquiry from a member of the 1946 Balliol Men's Third VIII who wishes to find out if anyone has ever had more bumps than his crew attained. In Summer Eights 1946, they achieved 8 bumps, this of course being in the days where Eights lasted longer. Anyone know of anyone who's beaten this record?

| It's been beaten at least three times in recent Eights: 2005: Jesus IV men +10 places 2005: St John's II women +11 places 2004: Queen's III men +11 places and probably a few times before that ... http://www.atm.ox.ac.uk/rowing/bumps/ | |

| Does this refer to actual bumps, or places gained? I'm not denying that the achievements of the modern crews appear to beat those of the 1946 Balliol crew, but if it's actual "bumps" rather than places gained by overbumping etc, then surely that's impossible to beat nowadays? | |

| In 1946 I believe Eights was run over 6 days, so to get 9 bumps I assume they must also have been counting places gained rather than boats bumped. | |

| 6 days?? did these undergrads do no work?? | |

| Well, 7 days from beginning to end: Thursday-Wednesday, but with Sunday off - hence the expression "Eights Week". | |

| 8 bumps in 6 days is perfectly doable, not only that but also... Day 1: Start 12th in Div 6. Quintuple overbump to head of Div 6. Race as Sandwich boat in Div 5. Bump to 12th in Div 5. Day 2: Repeat to finish 12th in Div 4. Day 3: Repeat to finish 12th in Div 3. Day 4: Repeat to finish 12th in Div 2. Day 5: Repeat to finish 12th in Div 1. Day 6: Quintuple overbump and go Head. That gives you 11 bumps in 6 days and a headship blade, although I will admit it does trust just 'a little bit' to Lady Luck. | |

| i believe that in 1946, when they had 6 days of bumps racing, there werent 6 mens divisions... | |

| Probably easier since it was in Torpids, but for a more contemporary comparison, SJCBC 2nd Torpid went up 9 in 1937. Don't ask me how I know that. | |

| Tim, stop trying to take glory away from the W2. It's all about the triple overbump... | |

Well said Mark, it is indeed.
