Any news on likely flag changes? I'm hoping that most of yesterday's rain fell here and downstream, but all the locks above us are now yellow boarded

I haven't been able to get hold of the Lock today. We were running low but there really isn't any space for any more rain, so we expect the flag to change up soon.

Stream has increased through the day - if you do have an outing tomorrow morning please check the flag before you leave, and if you are a novice cox (and assuming the flag still says green tomorrow) make an assessment with your coach before boating.

Remember the fact that it is green flag does not mean it is definitively safe to boat. If you find yourself moving more than 1-2 lengths downstream when you spin then you and your crew probably can't cope with the stream and should come in on the next loop.

It looked like Blue Flag conditions already early this afternoon.

Supposing the flag were to change before IWL on Sunday (which is apparently likely), would novice coxes still be allowed?

With the presence of marshals making river use safer, allowing novice coxes may give them vital, and perhaps their first, racing experince through the gut. I imagine this would let Torpids run more smoothly.

I'm not sure if there is prescedent for this, however I do (I think) rememeber an IWL in MT '08 running on Amber flag, but with experienced coxes allowed.

We will make an assessment over the weekend of how much the stream increases, where it increases (i.e. is more being pulled at Hinksey or Iffley), and if it is continuing to increase on Sunday, or has levelled out or even started to drop again. Things can change for the better over two days to conditions where novices would be allowed, but could also change for the worse, and with 16 crews in divisions it may be the right call to not allow novices, or only allow novices who already have 2 terms etc.

All these factors (and more) will be taken into account, and as I've described above there are numerous options open to the race committee of how to allow the best possible and safest possible racing on the day. In order to make the best decision it may have to be delayed until Sunday morning, depending on what we hear from the EA, lockkeeper etc, so if there will be an announcement of what we are going to go ahead with either tomorrow evening or Sunday morning, so keep checking the OURCs/captains maillist and the frontpage of the website.
