See http://www.ourcs.org.uk/mail/1266924943

I've had a couple of enquiries asking "are you serious?". Yes, I am.

If all the rain/snow forecast for the next week falls, or worse, then we might be on the brink of cancelling Torpids. There is no space in the water table, the fields are soggy, so any precipitation in the Thames catchment area (which is mostly west/north) will come straight into the river. A particularly crucial day will be Sunday, when there's nearly an inch of rain predicted here and potentially more upstream.

If we're lucky, then actual rain will be lower, or further east/south, so won't affect us. The trouble is there is no way to tell at the moment. We will be surer nearer the time, but for now, you have to be ready for all situations.

We do use other tactics (moving bunglines up, restricting to non-novice coxes) before taking crews off the river, but the precise combination of wind and stream will dictate what happens. Note that there is a serious chance of high WSW wind (against stream) this Friday. If that forecast turns out to be correct, there is a high probabiity of S or X coxes only for Rowing On. Or Rowing On might even be cancelled if it's really bad. To anticipate protests, we do not have a river closure agreed with other river users for another day, so would not be able to reschedule Rowing On.

RQ.

Just on the last point, something I've wondered this term is why IWL E was scheduled for Sunday of 6th week rather than Sunday of 7th - in previous years it was not only more convenient for most 1st VIIIs to take part since they had moved permanently back to the Isis ready for Torpids, but also Rowing On could be pushed back to the Sunday if needed (as happened last year). Is there any particular reason why the IWL dates were chosen as such this year?

Torpids ran in 6th last year (and in one of the two previous years as well). Thus the IWL that was cancelled to make way for rowing-on was on Sunday of 6th. We followed the pattern of dates from last year. Given the oversubscribed nature of entries I'm not sure too many colleges found this scheduling an insurmountable obstacle.

My bad on the term dates - I guess my post makes more sense if you replace "7th week" and "6th week" with "the week of Torpids" and "the week before Torpids" respectively, as this has been the only year in the past 5 in which there wasn't an IWL scheduled for the week of Torpids (which has been 7th week 3 times and 6th week 2 times out of those 5).

My point was just as much about having the extra river closure for Rowing On, as I agree that there hasn't been a problem getting boats to compete in IWL.
