By my reckoning, the start order for Wednesday is this:

I'm still waiting to hear the randomised order for the new entries.

The random draw will be happening this evening.

A motion was also passed at the captains meeting that St Hilda's M1 be placed in a separate division from their M2 if both qualified from rowing on, so they will be inserted into Division VI with Hilda's M2 taking a random place in Div VII.

Just out of curiosity, are St Hilda's M1 going into a random place in Div 6 or a known fixed one?

Yes, how will this be done? If they are stuck at the bottom, there is a danger they will be bumped down, giving the same problems they were trying to avoid.

It depends on the wording of the motion - as it was put forward too late to make the agenda, and there aren't any minutes published yet, I can't tell what it was. The details of the motion will be in the minutes, which we'll refer to before inserting St Hilda's M1. I suspect that unless it specifically requests that M1 and M2 do not row in the same division all week (as the Osler House motion did) then St. Hilda's will be inserted at the foot of the division, but this will be decided later.

The wording of the motion passed was:

Motion:
St Hilda's is entering 2 men's crews for Rowing On. In the event both qualify, we request that they be placed in differing divisions (M1 in the higher division) since, the college only having gone co-ed this year, they share a boat and blades and would face difficulties both rowing in the same division.

Proposed: Phil Robinson (St Hilda's)
Seconded: Sophie Harvey (St Hilda's)

But of course we're planning to bump so it won't be a problem....:p

Out of the three boat order motions (Osler, Green Templeton, and St Hilda's), only Osler's specifically mentioned the position in a division. Like St Hilda's, Green Templeton also didn't mention exact placement (though it's a moot point since GTC M2 didn't row on). So St Hilda's was not alone in making this accidental oversight. Also, since the Osler proposal went first, it's possible that some people inferred that similar principles (of placement) would be applied to the other two motions.

IIRC, wasn't there some unresolved controversy regarding placement of St Hilda's M1 (at least for Torpids) relying on the 1996 situation with Somerville? At some point last term, St Hilda's was under the impression that they wouldn't have to row on (which they did end up having to do). Minutes from last term seem to suggest that the issue was tabled and never fully revisited.

Given the challenges that St Hilda's Men and Green Templeton (the latter on principle, though moot b/c of rowing on results) face on account of being new clubs, would it possibly be a reasonable compromise to give them a little bit of breathing room so as to avoid having an equipment/crew conflict? e.g. place them in the middle or lower middle of Div 6 rather than the foot? To compensate, St Hilda's M2 could also be placed in the middle or lower middle of Div 7. Although the wording of the motion doesn't prohibit it, it would seem rather unproductive to place Hilda's M1 at the bottom of Div 6 and then see Hilda's M2 randomly end up at the top of Div 7.

St. Hilda's have already gained an advantage with the passing of the motion. Crews which otherwise would have been in Div 6 and a place closer to the fixed divisions will be disadvantaged as it is. Any agreed allowance made for St Hilda's and GTC to resolve equipment clashes ought to disadvantage as few crews as possible, and by the smallest amount possible.

Anyway, as Phil says, St Hilda's are aiming to bump. Good to see they've caught on nice and quickly.

Would somebody from OURCs please hurry up and put the Eights start order up? For those colleges with crews racing in the Rowing On divisions, it is impossible to plan marshalling timetables without knowledge of when each boat will be racing.

I think it's a fair bet that Men's Div 7 will be Somerville M2, Jesus M4 and the 11 non-Hildas-M1 new boats. But I'd still appreciate the order getting put up so I can procrastinate revision by predicting each day's bumps based on the Rowing On times...

A provisional order is now up (at http://eights.ourcs.org.uk) based on the random draw.
I think this is correct based on the wording of the motions through the captains meeting on Thursday, please let the committee know if you notice any problems.
