Dear All,

It seems that many boat clubs will struggle is Torpids is held for S coxes only.

We will very much rely on the willingness of Senior coxes to race with other colleges to ensure that as many crews as possible are able to race.

I am willing and happy to organise the coordination of available S coxes and needy crews should this arise. If captains would like me to do this, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can start the ball rolling - we need to have the contingency plan in place well before the S-coxes call is made.

Jess,

As a captain potentially in need of an S cox this seems to me a really helpful suggestion and the fairest way to do things. It would obviously rely on the willingness of the S coxes but if they are too few sharing them evenly so that everyone gets to race on some days seems a much superior solution to the richest/best connected racing every day.

Thanks for suggesting this.

Dear Jess,

St Anne's will also struggle if Torpids is run with S coxes only, and we'd be very happy if someone was able to organise some sort of system of sharing S coxes in the case that Torpids is run only on Amber Flag.

If you're happy and willing to organise such a system it's something that we would support wholeheartedly.

Thanks,

Solid- and, I guess, overdue- idea. I'll forward this on to our S coxes.

I hope the RowSab applicants are reading this thread...

Or,even, the current Secretary ;-) Would people value a way to do this online, then we could centrally allocate? I am sure we could add this in to the system...

Thanks a lot for doing this - great idea and really ueseful

Bear in mind that if we go to S coxes only, this is _only_ with half-divisions, which means that 7 per division are needed. We would expect coxes doubling up to do so only every other division, otherwise they might be at the Head while their next crew is trying to boat.

Note that all substitutions still need to be logged - either online up until 9am of the day of racing, or after that, at race desk.

The plan is to be able to tell you about Wednesday's schedule and requirements by 4pm on Monday. Due to the changing conditions, we won't announce plans for Thursday's racing until Tuesday afternoon.

I still have no idea what it will be for Wednesday. The EA expects the Isis to go to red boards by tomorrow, but we then need to factor in how much water is upstream of us, which partly depends on tonight's rain.

RQ.

Just to confirm that the Isis is currently at 7.5 Bucks at Iffley with a further 5 drawn at Hinksey.

I have had quite a large response from many colleges.

If any senior coxes have not filled out their availability form but would be willing to cox another crew at some point should Torpids go ahead on S coxes only, please fill out the following form:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en_GB&formkey=dEpBSTRuWjFBTW1uWl96MGJBMEg1VGc6MA

Once the race committee give us a schedule for Wednesday i will start straight away to match people up and let you know with reasonable warning.

I would like to stress that coxes will of course be able to cox their own colleges, and i will make sure there should be enough time between different crews.

If you have any questions please let me know - the more people who take part, the more likely it is that as many people as possible will get to race.

Jess.

I would have thought it more likely that any S coxes who volunteer will automatically have sorted out their own college commitments and thus any time volunteered will be when they are otherwise free.
The spreadsheet and forum threads suggests that you will be attempting to assign coxes to all crews in a division. I would have thought it more likely that you will need only a few per div for those colleges who don't have their own S cox.

Hi Liz,

To clarify I will only be assigning coxes who are free to colleges in need.

The reason i did the spreadsheet in terms of times rather than divisions was that if things are run on half divisions, the timings would change. Most of the coxes have told me which crews they are intending to cox - i can then use their timings to try and find other colleges who may need a cox when they are free rather than assume that they are free all day as they may have other commitments which are non rowing.

I certainly don't mean to interfere with colleges who do not need additional coxes, rather just try to help out those who do.

Jess.

Some coxes have voiced the concern that they may end up doing a large number of races with no reward.

If this system is run again then perhaps it should be considered to set the cost at a fixed cost per race to encourage coxes but avoid a bidding war.

Since it is somewhat late to enforce this now, can i suggest that if Torpids runs on S coxes only, captains should consider offering some sort of reward to any cox that may be assigned to you through the system.

Although most people are involved with rowing for love not money, it has been pointed out that many senior coxes are also finalists so although they are willing to help out, if they are coxing multiple races on the same day, they are losing alot of time, so it would be nice to reward them in some way.

Jess.

Those crews which do acquire a guest cox (either directly or through this initiative) must be aware that your new cox does not know your ability and will have to make snap judgements on the day, ie they will not know that you start slowly but magically leap into a sprint if someone is closing on the stern and your new cox is therefore more likely (in the interest of not getting damaged) to concede a little earlier than your usual cox might have.
It may also help to arrange to have your coach brief the new cox as to the 'true' competence of the crew

Hi All,

Thankyou to all the coxes who have volunteered to take part and give up some of their time.

It looks to be working, I have 5 races still in need of a S cox - if i can find them, every boat scheduled to race will be able to.

If you are a senior cox, or know a senior cox, who in addition to their own race would be willing to do even just one more for another college, please email me and let me know if you are available.

Thanks again for everyone who has helped out with this -

Jess.

Last one from me i hope - for today anyway...

I need 1 S cox to race at 12.30 other than those who have already emailed me.

If ANYONE is available who would be able and willing to race just that one race at 12.30 it would be very much appreciated by the crew i assign you to.

Please email me as soon as possible with your bod card number.

Thankyou very much to all those who have volunteered so far - if i can find this one cox for this one race, then EVERY CREW will get to race on Wednesday...

PLEASE HELP!!!

Jess
