IMPORTANT - Greenford barge locations for Eights
 | 22nd May 2009 | | Rachel Quarrell <quarrell@herald> |
My negotiations with Greenford (who are mending the towpath and riverbank)
were thrown into somewhat of a spin today when they changed their minds
about being able to moor their barges outside the Sea Scouts. There are
security issues if they are too accessible on any site away from their
main compound.
Instead, we have agreed on a compromise, which should not be inconvenient
for those racing in Eights.
One dark blue barge is moored right beside the lower Long Bridges
footbridge, and will be well out of the way (but will not be moving,
marshals please note).
Two more are moored tight in amongst the trees on the northern bank of the
Gut (the non-towpath side), in the lower, wider section of the Gut, and
well out of the way of the racing line.
They are tucked right in and have a sticking-out tree right in front of
them so there is no reason for crews to think it's clever to veer near,
but this email is a warning I would like captains to distribute to all
coxes (and coaches of novice crews).
Please will those having Isis outings over the next few days clock the
location of the barges, so that if you bump out in the Gut, you are aware
of them.
Most coxes will be able to check out the barges as they go downstream
during their pre-bumps warm-up, as well, so there will be no excuse for
not knowing where they are. St Anthony's coxes please take a good look as
you cycle down to the Isis boathouse.
The barges were moved during today's racing so that anyone in the last
three divisions will have already rowed past their position.
And before anyone clever asks, yes we did exhaust all other options,
including some rather creative ideas. This is the only one they would
accept, and was better than their preferred solution of leaving the barges
on the towpath side _in_ the Gut throughout Eights. Greenford will be off
all next week and will start working again the week after Eights.
Please circulate this.
Thanks,
RQ.
