Dear All,

I am sorry to say that IWL B will not happen this Sunday and will be
postponed until next term. This is due to the advice of the EA and the lock
keepers. The entry fees for crews who have already paid will be refunded.

I am terribly sorry for all crews involved and the inconvenience caused. I
have detailed the reasons for our decision below. I will endeavour to sort
out a date for IWL B early next term and advise you all of when this will be
as soon as possible.

I hope you all enjoy the Oxford Christmas and the last week of term,

Best Wishes,
Ben Thurston

The reasons for cancellation are as follows:

At present the lock at the bottom of the Isis stretch has the equivalent of
5 bucks pulled (red flag), plus another 18 inches we don't generally take
into account. Also, all the Hinksey radials are open (the gates that cause
the Longbridges draw). River level is -2, and flat, although we are now at
the stage where any rainfall has an almost immediate impact on the river
level. Showers are forecast for later, and heavier rain is expected upstream
this afternoon and evening. The lock keeper predicts that there will be no
shutting in (reduction in bucks drawn) upstream, and that if he does
anything over the next 36 hours it will almost certainly be to draw another
buck or half-buck.

In terms of asking the EA and Iffley Lock for advice on how to proceed: the
EA waterways officer (Paul Smith) and the Iffley lock keeper are in
agreement that at present, and also with the predicted conditions, it would
not be safe in their eyes to hold any form of racing this weekend. Whilst
levels are low, the stream is high, and this is a volatile combination (as
the fast water mimics the river bed, making for unpredictable and powerful
currents). The water is also both very dirty, obscuring obstacles, and very
cold. When asked about the possibility of putting senior crews only on the
water, the lock keeper gave the view that a boat should only be on the water
at the moment to save something/somebody in the water. All unnecessary river
use should be avoided.

With this in mind, I did not feel able to safely run IWL this Sunday.

Ben
