RE: Flag update today?

I see you left it blue because of the wind. I was steering a four this afternoon & the wind really was nothing to worry about. I really dont think you should be modifying flag over wind of that level.
Incidentally, the flag in winter has always been set on bucks drawn with no paddles present; the last two winters have had the paddles kept in all winter (normally only used in high summer), so when the paddles are present there is effectively 1-2 bucks worth of flow missing. Give that you take the stoney into account, shouldnt you also adjust for the paddles?

Flag update today?

Its 1 & 1/2 bucks on the stoney weir only with no paddles open. Wind negligible. Surely it should be green?

Cox wanted

LMH are looking for an experienced cox for a few weekday morning outings on the Isis. Weve got a few grads who will be around for the rest of 9th week and all of 10th week, and all of our coxes have now gone home. Weve got a bow-loading 4+, so experience steering one would be preferable.

Get in touch at the above email address if you think you might be able to help.

Cheers,
Paul.

I forgot to mention, if you saw what happened from one of the other boats on the river as opposed to the bank, I obviously would still like to hear from you.

Call for Witnesses

There was a collision between Lincoln and Somerville on Tuesday 15/11 at about 6:45 am near the head end of boathouse island. The crews and coxes give conflicting reports about what happened, did anyone witness the crash from the bank? If yes, please let me know!

RE: Torpids dates?

Try running Torpids without any SUs many of whom will be involved in WeHORR. Its not just the people racing we need to think about.

Saying well keep it a week early unless its bad weather then change at the last minute isnt feasible. You cant suddenly change it a week out due to proctors/first aid/EA permissions.

Putting it a week later doesnt mean there is any less chance of it being cancelled. Indeed, in recent memory the race was in 7th week, with perfectly fine conditions in 6th, but high flag conditions in 7th. You can not predict the weather far enough out for it to make a difference.

For the vast majority of crews on the Isis, one extra week of training is going to make very little difference. Especially as all the crews you will be racing against have exactly the same amount of time to train in.

Add all this to the fact that we should encourage as many crews to participate in prestigious external regattas as possible and then, for once, you find that the status quo is actually probably the most reasonable option.

RE: Torpids dates?

I feel it is the interest of all those wanting to experience the large world of rowing outside the Oxford college system to have the opportunity to row in the external competitions such as Womens Head. This race along with Fours Head gives crews who have been putting in the training miles over the winter a chance to experience racing against 500 other crews from around the world and compete in something which is so very different to those on the Isis. There are not many other head races which give crews the chance to do this so the opportunity shouldnt be taken away.
