Eights DVD

I wondered if such a thing as the Eights 07 DVD has is in existence yet, or if not, are there are plans for one?
What about the 06 eights DVD similarly?

W1 Thursday

Hi,
Im trying to gather as many photos as I can get from summer 8s of balliol W1. However, a photo that i so far have not found is of us bumping Hildas on the thursday. Does anyone have one/know of one that I could get a copy of? Even better, does anyone have a video?
Thanks

BENDING THE RULES?

Dear all,
I was wondering what the boatic community think of allowing coxes to be aided directly by members of the bank party by means of walkie talkies.

Imagine the situation.

The bumps canon fires. Just around a blind corner, two crews in front have bumped and are clearing to the wrong side. Your coach comes into your head clear to the opposite side, you clear to the opposite side and avoid the crews. Every other crews, cant see this and clip the clearing crews.
A minute into the race, and your crew comes to half a boat length of the crew in front. You dont know when to make the push. You dont want to lean out, as youll unbalance the boat. Instead you find a voice in your head, say hold off, as the crew in front are about to get the bump. You hold off and save your crews energy.
Into the second minute of the race, and your stroke-man signals the crew behind are closing in fast. You dont look around, as itll mess up the crews balance. You dont know when to make your defensive push or if to concede. All of a sudden, the voice in your head informs you that the crew behind you are on the 6th stroke of a power 10 and are quickly tiring. Their stroke rate has fallen to 34, so you let the crew behind you do 4 more strokes and then make your defensive push after the crew behind is tiring. You pull cleanly away.
Youre now into the gut. All the other crews have been taking a certain line, and you dont know which line to take. Suddenly your coach comes into your head, take the outside line as the water is clearer. You take it and gain even more advantage. In addition, no other crews are able to communicate with the bank parties as the river is too wide.
By now, with all the added information, youre going in for the double over bump. It is extremely lucky that you have another person telling you exactly your distance, as all the other crews can bearly hear their coaches as they go past the boat house. It isnt obvious whether you should go in for a bump with blades or a bump with bows. Youve no idea which way the crew in front are going, as your view is completely concealed by your massive stroke man. Suddenly a voice in your head says theyre running away to bow side, you immediately change your course without hesitation without having to lean out or having seen the other crew. Next thing a voice in your head tells you that the crew in front have done a power 10 to push away. You are told to make your crew do a power 10 immediately to bump whilst theyre tired. You do, and you take the bump.

In other words, being directly linked means having 2 coxes in the boat. Except with the added advantage of being able to see and know exactly what is happening to the crews in front and behind.
-Arent we taking away from the spirit of things?

Apologies to Wadham Mens 1st Eight

Id like to apologise most sincerely to wadhams mens first eight for some of the comments that were made at the end of racing today. They were completely inappropriate and unsportsman like. It was a great race, very reminiscent of our epic battle on saturday of torpids, and the comments were uncalled for- i apologise.
i wish you the very best of luck for the rest of eights- lets make it another great race tomorrow!

PA System

I want to know about whats happening down at the river as much as anyone and I certainly detest sitting in exam schools rather than being in a boat, but this afternoon, I was sitting in South School trying to concentrate on what I was writing and could hear the PA coming through the closed windows. Worse than being able to hear it, I could hear it and couldnt work out what was being said!

If the wind is in a Northernly direction, can the PA system be turned down a bit please? I was down on Boathouse Island after my exam and the volume was loud enough down there that it being a little quieter wouldnt stop everyone hearing loud and clear.

Otherwise a good days racing from what Ive heard.

Good luck tomorrow everyone...

bumps chargs

Any chance of some updated bumps charts appearing on the website? esp the fun one where you can click on specific years & crews etc. We & Catz are interested to see exactly how much of the last 5 years weve spent chasing each other...
